The 79th Nevada Legislative Session concluded nearly 8 weeks ago.  Many bills became effective upon signing by the Governor; many became effective on July 1st; and some will become effective on October 1st.  Overall, we did pretty well in stopping bad legislation aimed at hurting our public safety members and in promoting new legislation designed to help our members.  NAPSO sent weekly updates throughout the session to keep our members informed and they stimulated more interest and action by our members than ever before.  We thank all of you who weighed in on bills that were on our radar and those who took the time to testify in Carson City and Las Vegas in furtherance of our dedicated mission.

Our work for the next session has already begun.  NAPSO's Legislative and Political Action Team (LPAT) is busy analyzing what went right and what went wrong during the 2017 session.  We are working with our partners in the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition (including NAPSO, Metro PPA, Metro PMSA, PORAN, FOP, Reno PPA, etc.) to improve upon our candidate interviewing and selection processes.  We are working with the Nevada State AFL-CIO to develop a score card on all of the state legislators to determine if they helped or hurt us and how we must retain or replace them during the next session.  Our affiliation with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) is stronger than ever and we continually look to them for political wisdom and guidance.

I encourage each of our Presidents who receive this newsletter to send it down to their memberships and I invite all of NAPSO'S 1,500 statewide members to get involved in preparing for the next session in 2019.  Our LPAT meetings are typically held at the conclusion of our monthly NAPSO board meetings in the Henderson office.  The dates and times of those meeting are posted on NAPSO'S website (

Be interested in your future as a public safety professional.  Offer your voice on issues that matter to you, your families and your communities.  Become active.  Attend our LPAT meetings and learn how you can make a difference for yourselves and your public safety brothers and sisters.

As always, be safe.
